Wild Chamomile (Matricaria recutita) is a well-known wildflower found growing on the sides of the road and is chalky soil in early summer. Because it is a common plant, it can be found anywhere, in gardens, in uncultivated areas, on fields, on road edges and so on. It has fragrant small white flowers with yellow centres. The plants self-seed rapidly and have to checked otherwise they may become invasive. There are two main varieties of chamomile, Roman and German.
German chamomile is a delicate looking plant that is surprisingly tough. The ferny foliage tends to flop over and the tiny flowers look like miniature daisies. Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) is often used as a groundcover or creeping plant used to soften the edges of a stone wall or walkway. Roman chamomile is a perennial. The German chamomile discussed here is the annual herb used for making tea. Both the leaves and the flowers are used for tea. Some people think chamomile has a slight apple-like taste. The leaves can be more bitter than the flowers.
Calla lily flower known for its distinctive shape is beautiful. The Calla Lilies are plants belonging to the Zantedeschia genus in the Araceae family. The genus contains seven plant species and they are all commonly referred to as Calla Lillies. Some of them have other common names as well. Zantedeschia aethiopica is also known as giant white arum lily and common arum lily. Zantedeschia albomaculata is sometimes sold as spotted arum lily, and Zantedeschia rehmannii is known as the pink arum lily. Zantedeschia elliottiana has a yellow shade and is therefore called yellow or golden arum lily. The other three species, Zantedeschia odorata, Zantedeschia jucunda and Zantedeschia pentlandii, are usually called just Calla Lilies.
All the Calla Lilies originate from the African continent and are found wild between north Malawi and South Africa.
Viburnum x bodnantense “Dawn” is an upright, somewhat untidy deciduous shrub with oval leaves. For the longest time clusters of deep pink buds on the bare stems open to reveal delicate, very fragrant flowers. Common name is Bodnant Viburnum.
It is characterised by its numerous and densely packed 7.5cm (3in) clusters of rose, pink or blush white blooms, appearing in winter and very sweetly scented. In cold gardens bushes flower from January to March, but in mild winters they bloom from October to March with a short break. This is the period which which these plants shine, during the summer they are background fillers for the most part. These are easy plants to grow requiring moist well drained soil. The best blooming is produced in dappled to full sun.
Saintpaulia is a genus of six species in the Gesneriaceae family and is related to gloxinia. Regardless to commonly used name African violet, it has nothing in common with European violet. Saintpaulia is named after Baron Walter von Saint Paul-Illaire (1860-1910) , who was the district commissioner of Tanga province who discovered the plant in Tanganyika (now Tanzania) in Africa. He discovered the plant on the Nguru mountains in todays Tanzania. Like many other house plants Saintpaulia is firstly, and successfully grown in United States. Today it is very popular flowering plant and could be cultivated and purchased througout all year.
